Category: I “like”…

The other day I went out to a cool newbie farm to pick up some raised garden beds. The farm is owned by Jason and Sandi and is located a few miles west of Commerce. I arrived about 15 minutes after the birth of a four-legged baby. Jason, a newbie organic farmer, was super proud of baby, (I’m pretty sure he would’ve been passing out cigars if he’d had some!), and he took me inside the pen to get a close up look at the cute little fella.

Mama goat was very nice and well behaved, so I got to pet baby (and note his back half was smeared with something that coulda been goat poop, but I was hoping and pretending and also praying was mud. I like goats. Goat poop, not so much). Anyway, me being me, I immediately wanted me a goat. Unfortunately, my backwards, behind the times subdivision covenants, prohibits them. Same reason I can’t have a coupla chickens. :-( My thinking is this: not only are goats cute, they eat grass. Everyone who really knows me, knows I hate cutting grass, so I’m thinking bye bye lawnmower. Oh, the bliss of that!). Someone come buy my house so I can find myself a tiny shack on an acre or two and start myself a hippie farm.:-)

Jason told me they plan a canning class in the near future and also have some other interesting ideas in the works. I plan to go back out and check out the rest of their gardens/animals in the next month or so, so stay tuned. Check out the newbie farmers cool blog: http://WWW.aboutanacre.com

A tiny little town called Bowman, Ga. has it going on with an equally tiny, but charming new coffee shop. They hosted a fantastic poetry reading called "When Words Collide" awhile back. I attended and loved watching the performances which took place from up in the small loft area. The doors were open and people also milled about outside as they listened to the creativity flowing down.

Now CJ (who I just realized shares the same initials as me – ok, I’m having a slightly narcissistic moment here!) :-) , is also hosting open mic night for musicians, poets, etc. Next open mic is scheduled for Thursday, April 14th. at 7 p.m. So, cmon and brang it on with your own talent, or come support the local talent and make some new friends.

Virtual hiking

With GoVirtual Hike you can travel the country and see loads of beautiful scenery without ever leaving your home!  It is also a good resource tool for those planning real life hiking adventures.  What I particularly like about this site is that it was born out of empathy and compassion for a friend who was unable to get out and experience hiking and beauty.  Here I’ll let the words of the site owner, Nunya,  explain it to you:   “The idea of Virtual Hiking came to me back in 2003 in an effort to cheer up my neighbor, Carol, who can no longer walk due to many health issues.  I started to photograph hikes…so that she could feel she was hiking with us…and go as many places as she wanted in her mind…”

There are over 300 hikes posted on this site from Arizona, California, Coloroda, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, and Hawaii.  So if you’ve ever wondered what a hike would look like before going on it, or if you just want to experience the visual beauty while sitting in your home, this is the site for you!  Check it out:  http://www.GoVirtualHike.com

Elizabeth Wilhide is a leading expert on interior design and has written quiet a few books on the subject.   The photographs alone, not to mention the introductory remarks, makes this book worth purchasing.  It is also chocked full of interesting tidbits of history.  Although the books is full of  photographs of extremely creative decorating ideas, it is not simply a pretty coffee table book full of imaginative photographs as there  is also substantial text.  If you have been dying to experiment by decorating in a style that truly is expressive of your individual tastes, this book just may provide you with the nudge to take the leap into going your own way with style.

The chapters are:  Introduction; Artist in residence; Brushwork; Applied Arts; Loose Living; Found Objects; Private View; Appendices.   Some of the things covered in some of the chapters are:  floor painting, collage, paperwork, mosaic, tiles, mirrors, laid-back living, improvision, found objects, orderly disorder, identifying colors you like, and more.   I really love this book!

I ran across a blog on art, culture, photography, and writings by a 23 year old Melbourne, Australian woman called Ash.  I spent a good bit of time viewing her many creative photographs and reading her writings.  I am re-posting this one pic and writing from her site as I feel alot of what it says represents the inner feelings of many people in mainstream society who feel trapped in a cage, caught up in a lifestyle and job that is far removed from the dreams they once had.  We all have responsibilities, of course, but sometimes our closets are full of things we don’t need, and our driveways or garages are full of toys we slave to pay for, but have little time to use.  But anyway, this one is for those who feel trapped somedays as they spin away on their version of  the hamster wheel.  Great blog and thank you to Ash  for permission to reprint.  Check out the remaining site  at:  http://tarantulatrash.wordpress.com

I just re-read this, and realised it’s sort of like the opening to “trainspotting”. It’s not. It’s my frustration. I hate society, and its expectations. I want to escape.
